My husband and I were married in August 1993. We were both full-time graduate students, and we had no money. We really couldn’t afford a honeymoon, but I hated the idea of going nowhere. So when we saw a newspaper ad for a charter flight and hotel accommodations in Las Vegas for the total sum of $500, we knew we’d found our destination.
This was our first trip “out west.” I still remember seeing the mountains from the runway at McCarren airport for the first time. The hotel – the Palace Station – was off the strip and nothing to get excited about, but we had a great time. Las Vegas was like nothing we’d ever experienced, and it was a very budget friendly destination for us. I don’t recall gambling at all, other than maybe putting a few quarters in some slot machines. We walked around, took in the free entertainment, and saw a show or two. We’ve been back a few times since our honeymoon, and have stayed at much more desirable hotels, including Mandalay Bay, the Stratosphere, and the Marriott. I think Las Vegas is a great place for a few days and it will always have a special place in my heart, remembering our Honeymoon in Vegas!
