When Son1 was just 3 months old, my mother moved to Nags Head, on North Carolina’s Outer Banks. This afforded us the opportunity to spend long weekends and a week each summer at the beach at Grandma’s. Taking little kids to the beach can be a challenge, as they don’t have nearly the endurance that adults do for sun and sand, but when they can play or nap inside at Grandma’s while Mom and Dad get some beach time, it makes for a pretty great vacation. We spent our summer vacation here every summer from 2000-2012. My in-laws also came along, so it was truly family vacation time. Eventually my mother moved away, and the kids got old enough to go other places. We haven’t been back in several years, but it will always be one of my favorite beach destinations. There is no boardwalk. It is mostly a narrow strip of land comprised of 2 parallel roads, flanked by houses, restaurants, and shops. There are a few hotels, but mostly you will find rental homes, ready to welcome summer beach goers.
